Abstract Health, and in turn income welfare, depend on access to safe drinking water. Although the majority of rural households worldwide obtain water from community sources, there is limited evidence about how effectively these sources provide This study combines a randomized experiment with quality testing evaluate impact program that provides deep tubewells Bangladesh. The reduces exposure arsenic, major natural pollutant, but not fecal contamination. Households may use fewer contamination, any such effects are offset by recontamination through transport possibly storage. results suggest while deep-tubewell construction programs reduce arsenic Bangladesh, reducing contamination require interventions go beyond sources.
